New Yorker: Paranoia (Said Sayrafiezadeh)

A beautifully written piece about uncomfortable subject matters. The story explores the topics of racism, illegal immigration, and war through the lens of blonde-haired, blue-eyed Dean. Dean feels pity for the injustices against the oppressed people he sees all around him (e.g. his black classmates, his illegal immigrant friend, the soldiers of a removed war), but is powerless to make a difference. He is aware on some level that his pity springs from the social superiority he has over these individuals. He doesn't deserve to live better than the less fortunate; his elevated station in life is the outcome of randomness and cannot be rationally justified. But he DOES live better so why mess with destiny, he seems to rationalize. He vacillates between a sense of entitlement and the paranoia that his entitlement may disappear at any given moment.
