I just thought that this was a really cool article. Apparently activity in your left temporal lobe (specifically the limbic system found in the area) can produce spiritual visions, voices, and revelations. A man who had temporal surgery suddenly found himself, "more compassionate and less ambitious". He has since gone from non-religious to Buddhist.
Personally I would love a little more temporal lobe activity. Apparently it makes for happier people.
