NEJM: America’s Safety Net and Health Care Reform — What Lies Ahead? (Dr. Redlener et.al)

Dr. Redlener makes the case that even if the health bills in congress get passed, there will still be a need for services such as medicare, medicaid, State Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP), and such physician programs such as the National Health Service Corps, "which provides tuition support and loan-repayment programs to encourage young medical professionals to practice in designated Health Professional Shortage Areas."

The more that I read about the details of health reform, the more it seems like little will fundamentally change regarding the health care system. Health insurance will still be provided by private insurance companies through employers and many people will still be underinsured. The biggest difference will be that some 30 million uninsured people will now be mandated to buy insurance, and a reallocation of government funds to help subsidize insurance payments for those we cannot afford it.

Will this be enough for the much needed healthcare makeover? I suppose one small change is better than none.
