NYT: The Calm Before the Storm (Peter Baker)

In this article, Peter Baker talks about how sooner or later there will be a showdown between the president and congress on some major issue. This article made me realize that I have no idea what is going on in Congress. Because everybody tends to make a big deal the president--what he's doing, not doing, etc.--I tend to forget that there are two other branches to the American government and that really I should be paying more attention to what my representatives in Congress are doing.

First step is to identify my senators. After a google search I discover that they are Kay Bailey Hutchinson and John Cornyn, both of whom I now remember voting for in the election. I wikipedia both of them (see links below) and realize that they are nothing like me! They both support drilling in Alaska and anti-abortion laws. Kay Bailey apparently wants public schools to go single sex and thinks its a good idea to dismantle the handgun ban in D.C. At least Kay Bailey serves as good example of female political influence and empowerment, but John Cornyn really gives me nothing to work with. He supports banning stem cell research, reauthorizing the patriot act, and received an A rating from the NRA. I'm not sure what he did to get that rating, but I don't like it. He publicly stated that gay marriage was as strange and wrong as someone wanting to marry a box turtle. Box turtle? I'm going to have to wikipedia that too later. And nothing says raging conservative to me as an inordinate hypersensitivity to flag desecration.

So yes, I've decided that I need to pay more attention to what is going on in Congress and holding my senators/representatives accountable for doing things that I don't agree with. I found a good website with all senators/representatives listed with their contact info: Texas Senators and Representatives.
